Highlights of the many Niagara Frontier reports received during a longer than expected absence, February 15 through March 6, include WILSON'S SNIPE, EASTERN MEADOWLARK, OREGON- type DARK-EYED JUNCO, HOARY REDPOLL, FOX SPARROW and spring migrants. Back on February 20, 2 likely-wintering WILSON'S SNIPE in Chautauqua County, along Route 60 at the Charlotte-Stockton Townline. EASTERN MEADOWLARK, March 4, on Bauer Road in the Town of Eden. 50 BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS February 15 at a feeder on Grand Island. And on the 4th, COMMON GRACKLE and 15 RED-W. BLACKBIRDS in the Genesee County Town of Bethany, and on the 5th, 3 COMMON GRACKLES in a Williamsville yard. Also in Williamsville, an OREGON-type DARK-EYED JUNCO on February 21 and 28. Apparent HOARY REDPOLLS among COMMON REDPOLLS at two feeders on Ellicott Creek in Amherst. And a FOX SPARROW was present at least 18 days during February on Tonawanda Creek Road in Amherst. Migrant waterfowl are joining wintering waterfowl in the region. Flocks of TUNDRA SWANS along Lake Ontario and over the Town of Caneadea in Allegany County. A pair of NORTHERN PINTAILS in the meadow at Amherst State Park. From the Town of Hume in northwest Allegany County, a large flock of EVENING GROSBEAKS at a feeder for the past month. This is the first report of EVENING GROSBEAKS since early winter. A good season for COMMON REDPOLLS continues into March. At a feeder in Orchard Park, a peak of 50 COMMON REDPOLLS with 10 PINE SISKINS. Also a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK at this location for two weeks. True signs of spring amid the recent heavy snowfall - TURKEY VULTURES, AMERICAN ROBINS, RED-W. BLACKBIRDS and COMMON GRACKLES widely reported. March 13, a SWALLOW SPECIES, most likely a TREE SWALLOW, over the Town of Tonawanda. March 10 in the Town of Aurora, a NORTHERN SHRIKE near the barn at Knox State Park. On Lake Erie, at least 14 waterfowl species at Dunkirk Harbor on March 10 included 75 HOODED MERGANSERS and 135 RED-BR. MERGANSERS, plus 5 PIED-BILLED GREBES, many HORNED GREBES, 2 RED-NECKED GREBES, 110 D.-CREST. CORMORANTS, 40 AMERICAN COOT, 1 LITTLE GULL and a high count of 480 GREAT BLACK-B. GULLS. Waterfowl are also still abundant on the upper Niagara River. In addition to a flock of over 30 TUNDRA SWANS at Beaver Island State Park, two MUTE SWANS on the river at the north end of Grand Island. Among the docks at the Mid-river Marina on River Road in Tonawanda, 11 waterfowl species included many CANVASBACKS, REDHEADS, GREATER SCAUP and COMMON MERGANSERS, with a few GADWALL, AMERICAN WIGEON and AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS. Also, BELTED KINGFISHER and AMERICAN COOT. On the ice off Old Fort Erie Beach in Ontario, 82 TUNDRA SWANS plus a SURF SCOTER. March 9 on patches of open water on Ellicott Creek in Tonawanda, 50 CANVASBACKS, REDHEADS and 3 HOODED MERGANSER. Other reports this week - in the Genesee County Town of Alexander, a pair of BALD EAGLES bringing materials to an established nest at Route 20 and Tonawanda Creek. Another BALD EAGLE migrating over the Village of Hamburg. Two PEREGRINE FALCONS on two lamp posts on the north Grand Island bridges. WHITE-FR. GEESE at the park, on the west branch of 12 Mile Creek. The geese flushed from the creek and were re-located on the lake with CANADA GEESE. A count of 8 GR. WHITE-FR. GEESE is the second highest for the species in the BOS archives. Other reports from the Lake Ontario Plains - 2 CACKLING GEESE on Marshall Road south of Lower Lake Road in the Town of Yates. At Shadigee in Yates, 42 HORNED GREBES and 2 RED- NECKED GREBES. 2 WOOD DUCKS on 12 Mile Creek, and 2 NORTHERN SHRIKES in Orleans County. March 21 at Youngstown-Wilson Road at Hulbert Road in Wilson, 5 SNOW GEESE and 41 TUNDRA SWANS. Chautauqua County waterfowl reports - maximums from Dunkirk Harbor this week included 365 GREATER SCAUP, 1 LESSER SCAUP, 2 SURF SCOTERS, 60 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 2 BLACK SCOTERS, 167 RED-BR. MERGANSERS, 68 HORNED GREBES, 1 RED-NECKED GREBE, 27 BONAPARTE'S GULLS and a BALD EAGLE. Other Chautauqua County reports - in a flooded field on Center Road in the Town of Sheridan, unexpected 2 COMMON GOLDENEYES and 3 BUFFLEHEADS, plus blue-phase SNOW GOOSE and numbers of NORTHERN PINTAIL, AMERICAN WIGEON and HOODED MERGANSER. At the Van Buren Road ponds in Pomfret, 7 TUNDRA SWANS, 168 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 2 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 1 GREATER SCAUP and 2 BUFFLEHEADS, plus numbers of AMERICAN BLACK DUCK and RING-NECKED DUCK. The watch is located in Lakeside Memorial Park, on Route 75 or Camp Road in Hamburg. Visitors are always welcome at the site.
