Highlights of reports received January 16 through January 24 from
the Niagara Frontier Region include HARLEQUIN DUCK, GOLDEN-CR.
KINGLET, EASTERN TOWHEE and COMMON RAVEN.
January 17, a female HARLEQUIN DUCK above Niagara Falls in Ontario,
between the shore and stranded barge, downriver from the Dufferine
Islands creek. Also above the falls, 26 GADWALL, 12 AMERICAN WIGEON,
ICELAND GULL and GOLDEN-CR. KINGLET. At the power plant overlook on
the lower river, 8 ICELAND GULLS. Another ICELAND GULL and a LITTLE
GULL at Queenston, and at Niagara-on-the-Lake, RED-THROATED LOON and
76 LONG-TAILED DUCKS.
The BLACK-HEADED GULL on the upper Niagara River at the Austin
Street marina in Buffalo's Riverside was last reported January 16. On
the 20th off Riverside, thousands of COMMON GOLDENEYE, over 100
WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and several LONG-TAILED DUCKS. On the east
branch of the Niagara River off Grand Island, thousands of CANVASBACKS
with REDHEAD, GREATER SCAUP, LESSER SCAUP, BUFFLEHEAD and COMMON
MERGANSER. Between Navy Island and the Eagle Overlook on the West
River Parkway, 2 BALD EAGLES on an ice floe. And, a NORTHERN SHRIKE on
Grand Island, on Alt Blvd., north of Fix Road.
January 20 to 24, an EASTERN TOWHEE at a feeder in the Town of Eden.
In the Genesee County Town of Bethany this week, 2 COMMON RAVENS
continue to winter on Francis Road. On McLernon Road, 240 SNOW
BUNTINGS plus LAPLAND LONGSPUR and HORNED LARKS. On Paul Road, 125
more SNOW BUNTINGS, and on Paradise Road in Bethany, 2 EASTERN
BLUEBIRDS.
Other recent reports - RED-NECKED GREBE at Port Dalhousie in Saint
Catharines, Ontario. And, GLAUCOUS GULL on the Main Street beach at
Dunkirk Harbor.
