Highlights of reports received January 18 through January 25   from
the Niagara Frontier Region include CALIFORNIA GULL,   EASTERN
MEADOWLARK, SHORT-EARED OWL and waterfowl.

January 20, an adult CALIFORNIA GULL was found above Niagara   Falls
in Ontario. The marks on this gull were distinctly   different from the
CALIFORNIA GULL that frequents the lower   river power plants. Gulls at
the power plants this week   included 2 THAYER'S GULLS, 6 ICELAND
GULLS, GLAUCOUS GULL   and BLACK-LEG. KITTIWAKE. Possibly a second
BLACK-LEG.   KITTIWAKE was also found on the rocks upriver from the
power   plants.

Above the falls and on the breakwall in Ontario, several   each of
ICELAND GULL, L. BLACK-B. GULL and GLAUCOUS GULL.   Between Queenston
and Lewiston, 5 LITTLE GULLS, and 3 LITTLE   GULLS at
Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Along the escarpment   trail in
Queenston, CAROLINA WREN and 12 AMERICAN ROBINS. On   the upper river
at the Beaver Island State Park beach,   LITTLE GULL, 7000 BONAPARTE'S
GULLS and L. BLACK-B. GULL.

January 18, an EASTERN MEADOWLARK, rare in winter, in a tree   at the
entrance to Fort Niagara State Park in the Town of   Porter.

SHORT-EARED OWLS this week - one at a very unlikely location   - on
East River Road on Grand Island, roosted in a tree on   the banks of
the Niagara River. Another SHORT-EARED OWL   among numerous HORNED
LARKS and a few LAPLAND LONGSPURS and   SNOW BUNTINGS, on
Niagara-Orleans Countyline Road north of   Route 18. Three more
SHORT-EARED OWLS on Lake Road near   Marshall Road in the Town of
Yates. And, 6 SHORT-EARED OWLS   with 3 NORTHERN HARRIERS along
Dickersonville Road, between   Lake and Youngstown-Wilson Roads in
Porter.

From Grand Island, waterfowl numbers increased greatly this   week.
January 20, at Ferry and East River Roads, over 20,000   waterfowl,
mostly CANVASBACKS and COMMON MERGANSERS with   REDHEAD, GREATER SCAUP,
BUFFLEHEAD, COMMON GOLDENEYE and   RED-BR. MERGANSER. January 21, a
count of over 10,000   CANVASBACKS and 100 TUNDRA SWANS off Beaver
Island, and 300   COMMON MERGANSERS at the Eagle Overlook on the West
River   Parkway. Also on Grand Island, a near adult BALD EAGLE in   the
trees inside the circle drive at Beaver Island.

Other reports this week - in the Cattaraugus County Town of   Dayton,
NORTHERN HARRIER, 5 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 10 ROUGH-
LEGGED HAWKS including 5 dark-phase, AMERICAN KESTREL and   NORTHERN
SHRIKE. On Route 77 at Bloomingdale Road in the   Town of Alabama,
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and AMERICAN KESTREL.   BALD EAGLES - on Chautauqua
Lake at Burtis Bay in Celeron,   another at Dunkirk Harbor and 2 BALD
EAGLES at Cayuga Pool   in the Iroquois Refuge. 1000 BONAPARTE'S GULLS
at Barcelona   Harbor on Lake Erie in Westfield. And in the Lake
Ontario   Plains, 60 WILD TURKEYS on Lower Lake Road at Burgess Road
in the Town of Somerset.

Dial-a-Bird will be updated Thursday evening, February 1.   Please
call in your sightings by noon Thursday. You may   report sightings
after the tone. Thank you for calling and   reporting to Dial-a-Bird.
