Highlights of reports received January 25 through February 1 from
the Niagara Frontier Region include HARLEQUIN DUCK, PEREGRINE FALCON,
PURPLE SANDPIPER, gulls and waterfowl.
January 27, abundant waterfowl at the source of the Niagara River,
between the ice boom and the Peace Bridge, included a HARLEQUIN DUCK.
Seen in flight several times from the Lakeshore Road viewing area in
Fort Erie, Ontario, near the historic fort. Also, a COMMON GOLDENEYE
X HOODED MERGANSER hybrid and a probable female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE.
Two PEREGRINE FALCONS, an adult and immature, chasing waterfowl
over the river. A third PEREGRINE FALCON on the river at the foot of
Hertel Avenue in Buffalo's Riverside.
More waterfowl at the south end of Grand Island. Between Beaver
Island State Park and Strawberry Island, dense flocks of thousands of
waterfowl, mostly CANVASBACKS, viewed from the Ferry Road marina on
Grand Island.
January 28, in the rapids above Niagara Falls, at least 2 PURPLE
SANDPIPERS, seen from the Engineerium Building in Ontario. Gulls at
the falls this week included ICELAND GULL, L. BLACK-B. GULL and
GLAUCOUS GULL. On the lower Niagara River, BLACK-LEG. KITTIWAKE at
the Whirlpool, LITTLE GULL upriver from the Beck Overlook, and at the
overlook, several ICELAND GULLS and L. BLACK-B. GULLS.
From Sunset Island, on Lake Ontario in Wilson, 2 ICELAND GULLS and
4 NORTHERN SHOVELERS; unexpected on Lake Ontario in January.
Dunkirk Harbor is still loaded with waterfowl, and the main pier
has re-opened. January 27, at least 12 waterfowl species included
6000 COMMON MERGANSERS, plus COMMON LOON, 14 PIED-BILLED GREBES,
GREAT BLUE HERON and BELTED KINGFISHER.
BALD EAGLES this week - over North Creek Road at 18 Mile Creek in
Hamburg, and at the Ontario Street boat launch in Riverside. To the
west of the BOS region, in Fisherville, Ontario, past Rock Point
Provincial Park, 15 SHORT-EARED OWLS on Fisherville Road near
Concession Road 6.
Dial-a-Bird will be updated Thursday evening, February 7. Please
call in your sightings by noon Thursday. You may report sightings
after the tone. Thank you for calling and reporting to Dial-a-Bird.
